Building the
Ohio River Valley

Mulzer Crushed Stone, located in Tell City, touches the lives of millions of people daily. Mulzer supplies the limestone, sand, and gravel for international airport runways, roads, interstate highways, dams, and chemical operations at utilities. Sixty years ago three Spencer County brothers: Arnold, Roland, and Edgar Mulzer started a small construction company that was to become Mulzer Crushed Stone. Humbly, “they weren’t quite ditch diggers; they finished up for ditch diggers,” building box culverts alongside newly constructed or upgraded roads throughout Indiana.

Celebrating Earth Day in the Cape Sandy Pollinator Habitat

Several of our employees and their families marked Earth Day by spending a few hours in the Cape Sandy Quarry Pollinator Habitat last Saturday, working together to get the garden ready for the growing season.  The volunteers, led by Sustainability Manager Wenona Fosselman, weeded, planted, spread mulch, and shared many laughs in the process!

Did You Know?  The Cape Sandy Quarry Pollinator Habitat Garden was started last summer and contains Indiana native plants that attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.  Why are Pollinator Habitat Gardens so important to our world?  Well, according to the Indiana Native Plant Society, adding even a few native plants to your landscaping or garden can:

add to the resources that support local wildlife;
build landscape corridors in our communities to counter habitat fragmentation;
help storm water percolate safely into the soil rather than running superheated into rivers and streams;
garden more sustainably, with less watering and fertilizing;
create growing spaces that honor your state’s rich natural heritage;
make gardening easier, because native plants will tolerate & thrive in your plant hardiness zone.

If you’re interested in learning more about plants that are native to your state, visit the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder and search by zip code.

River Crew Presented with Liberty Mutual® LifeSaver Award

In the right place at the right time.  When members of the Mulzer Crushed Stone boat crew gathered on the Cape Sandy Quarry river dock for a scheduled audit one early February morning, they had no idea that their water safety training would be the key to saving a man’s life.  We invite you to watch this powerful video to hear first-hand accounts of the events that took place that morning and see the quick-thinking, training-prepared crew members presented with a Liberty Mutual Life Saver Award in front of their peers.

US Congressman Jim Banks Visits Cape Sandy Quarry

The Cape Sandy team hosted Congressman Jim Banks earlier this week with a tour and up-close look at operations at one of our three aggregate quarries in Crawford County, Indiana. The visit was a great opportunity to educate the Congressman about our business and showcase how we are helping to build the Ohio River Valley region. Special Thanks to Ryan Lindsey with CRH Government Relations for helping us with the tour & the great photos capturing the Congressman's visit!

Ken Mulzer Honored with IMAA’s 2022 Keystone Award

Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association (IMAA) presented the 2022 Keystone Award to Ken Mulzer, President of Mulzer Family of Companies, at the association’s annual Winter Workshops & Award Banquet held in Indianapolis last week. The award, first given in the late 90’s, recognizes an individual in the aggregates industry who has shown exceptional leadership and outstanding dedication to advance the goals, growth, and well being of the Indiana aggregates industry. During the presentation, an IMAA Representative explained further, “By definition, the keystone is the topmost stone of an arch, popularly thought of as especially holding the others in place.”

Growing up in the third generation of a family whose legacy in the aggregate industry is still growing strong throughout Southern Indiana and beyond, Ken Mulzer has been a dedicated supporter of Indiana aggregates his entire career. From his first role at Mulzer Crushed Stone cleaning the shop at age 15, Ken has exhibited the traits of a tireless industry advocate in many ways, especially within the inner workings of IMAA. Most notably, Ken was a major supporter of the creation of WLMA (Women Leaders in Mining & Aggregates), he served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Leadership Panel, and represented membership as President in 2021. Ken also participated on the Build Indiana Council as an appointed IMAA Representative for three years. He is a 2022 Inductee of the Indiana Ready Mix Concrete Association Hall of Fame, joining a distinctive class of accomplished Ready Mix leaders, including his father, Ken Mulzer Sr., who was also the first recipient of the IMAA Keystone Award in 1998. Congratulations Ken!

Mulzer Companies Donates Over $28k to Perry Co. Habitat for Humanity

Our Annual Helping Habitat Charity Golf Outing, held in late September, was another HUGE success. Through the support of many golfers, corporate sponsors & volunteers, Mulzer Family of Companies was able to present a check for $28,321.35 to Perry County Habitat for Humanity!

We were excited to learn that this donation will go directly towards building a new home in Tell City for a family of four, located not too far from our Main Office. Tim Mulzer, COO, was at the site recently to attend the ground-breaking and help ‘turn some dirt’ to mark the special event.

We’re proud to support our local Habitat for Humanity chapters each year through funds raised at our Annual Charity Golf Outing, in-kind product donations, and employee volunteer build days, to aid in their mission to build homes and hope in our communities.
