Open House at New Amsterdam Quarry

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

The Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc. New Amsterdam, Indiana, Quarry recently held their annual Open House event at the quarry.  Area Ambulance, Fire Department and Trauma Helicopter teams were invited to tour the facility and eat lunch with the quarry employees.  This annual event was created to familiarize Emergency services in the area with the quarry and the employees.  Limestone quarries are expansive and unique locations and in the event of an emergency situation, it would be very beneficial for area Emergency services to be familiar with the operation.   The employees at the New Amsterdam Quarry served as tour guides and cooks, as well as informative hosts to the Emergency Services Personnel on site.

Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc. brings extra festival t-shirts each year to mark the annual festival, which loyal visitors purchase at cost.  We in turn donate the money we collect back to a local organization.  This year Heth Washington Elementary School located near the town received a $200.00 donation from Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc., the proceeds of our t-shirt sale.

Students make Sand Art necklaces at the Quarry during their visit

Students and Staff from the South Crawford County Head start group visited Tower Quarry on Friday, March 12 for a tour, activity and lunch. The Head Start Staff encouraged their young students to invite a special ‘Guy’ in their lives to participate in the visit, resulting in a full house during the recent visit. When we asked the kids what their favorite part of the visit was, the kids replied excitedly, “climbing on the rock pile and looking inside the big loader!”. Special thanks to all the employees at Tower Quarry for hosting! Steve Speedy, Natalie Maasberg and Beverly Dillard acted as tour and activity guides during the visit.

R.O.C.K. Visits E. Heights Elementary School near Henderson, KY

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Over 100 fourth graders from East Heights Elementary School near Henderson, Kentucky participated in a Geology presentation given by MCS Quality Control Manager, Bob Lingerfelt, in February.  The students listened to Lingerfelt’s presentation on the three types of rocks and saw samples of various rocks, including some from our quarries.  Students also participated in the geology activity, ‘Is it a Rock or a Mineral?’.  Students received four types of candy and were asked which represented a rock and which a mineral.  Two of the four types of candy were a Hershey’s Kiss and a Hershey’s Kiss with Almonds.  Can you guess which one represented a rock and which a mineral?  Minerals are homogenous, made up of one material, and Rocks are made up of two or more minerals.  Now can you guess?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

North Crawford County Head Start students and staff visited the Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc. Temple Quarry back on November 20 to get a closer look at how our quarry works and to celebrate their semi-annual Guy’s Day.  The preschool students are encouraged to invite a special guy in their lives, dad, grandpa, uncle, etc. to spend quality time doing an activity that both enjoy.  Lucky for us, they wanted to visit our Temple Quarry!  While visiting the quarry, students, staff and ‘guys’ were treated to an in-depth tour of the facility, an up-close visit of a large loader, made Pet Rocks and had lunch!  Over 72 guests made up the visitors group.  Special Thanks to employees Troy McCorkle and Beverly Dillard for hosting the group at Temple Quarry!
