Tips on Dealing with Sand from Sand Bags
Thursday, May 12th, 2011Now that the flood waters are receding and the need for sand bags is diminishing, disposing of the sand used to protect property is the next issue home owners’ face in the 2011 flood. The local Emergency Management Agency office recommends that you proceed with caution when finding a use or a storage location for the sand. Sand used in sand bags that may have come into contact with floodwater could be contaminated, which would affect how you should use the sand in the future. Sherman Greer with the Evansville Emergency Management Agency recommended in the Wednesday, May 11 edition of the Evansville Courier & Press that residents “should not use this sand for mortar or flowerbeds and that it should be thrown away at an approved solid waste site”. He also mentioned that it “should never be used in sandboxes for children”. EMA officials are still working with other agencies to determine if the sand can be used for other purposes. Vanderburgh County residents can also contact the Vanderburgh Co. Highway Department at (812) 453-5777 for more information on assistance in removing debris left over from the flood.
Need for Sand Subsiding; back to Normal Procedures

All Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc. yards will have sand available for purchase during normal operating hours beginning at 8:00 am. Saturday, May 7, from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

2011 Flood – MCS Rockport Yard
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011The Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc. yard in Rockport, Indiana, located on the Ohio River, has not escaped the flooding issues that have become so common in many communities throughout Southern Indiana. Below are photos of the yard and dry dock facility that is currently experiencing flooding. MCS dry dock welders and the ‘Mr. Bill’ boat crew have had to Jon boat to the dry dock facility every day since the flooding began to perform their work. Employees had to disconnect the electric that normally runs to the dry dock, tie off the #8 dredge above the spot where the dry dock is located and run the this portion of the facility off the 450 kw generator that is housed on the #8 dredge.
